The ¸£Àû¼§ Hurricanes made a statement this weekend, highlighted by a dominant football win and a strong opening weekend for the men's soccer team, while the baseball team had a weekend to forget.
From football's convincing victory to the men's soccer team matching its win total from last season, here's what went down Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13, as the Hurricanes competed in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA), Atlantic Football League (AFL) and Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) action.
The women opened their 2026 ACAA campaign Saturday, Sept. 12, hosting the defending ACAA champion MSVU Mystics at the Terry Fox Sports Complex.
The Mystics entered the matchup ranked No. 9 nationally, making it a significant early-season test for ¸£Àû¼§.
Saturday, Sept. 12 — 2-2 tie vs. MSVU Mystics
After a slow start, the Hurricanes found themselves down 2-0 in the 57th minute, but never lost hope and continued to push for a comeback.
Third-year fullback Jorja Shields (Tignish, P.E.I.) responded quickly, getting the Hurricanes on the board in the 62nd minute on a rebound following a corner kick.
It wasn't long after that when the Hurricanes earned another corner kick in the 74th minute. Second-year centre-back Liv MacDougall (Bonshaw, P.E.I.) headed the ball into the back of the net to tie the game.
Sunday, Sept. 13 — 2-1 loss vs. UKC Blue Devils
On Sunday, the women's soccer team looked to earn its first win of the season. The Hurricanes found themselves down early again, with the Blue Devils taking a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
Second-year midfielder Abby Murphy (Seaview, P.E.I.) scored her first goal of the year in the 32nd minute, firing a shot from the top of the box to tie the game at one apiece.
UKC retook the lead on a penalty kick in the 36th minute and held on for a 2-1 victory.
The Hurricanes women's soccer team will look to bounce back this weekend on the road, with games Saturday at UNBSJ and Sunday at STU.
The Hurricanes men's soccer team couldn't have asked for a better start to the season. After a two-win season last year, ¸£Àû¼§ matched its win total during opening weekend in convincing fashion and is determined to have a strong regular season this year.
Saturday, Sept. 12 — 3-0 win vs. MSVU Mystics
After a scoreless first half, the Hurricanes came out hot in the second half. Second-year striker Kai Nurse opened the scoring in the 48th minute with a header off a corner kick.
Just two minutes later, second-year centre-back Walid Lema (Cameroon) made it 2-0 on a break down the left side.
The Hurricanes continued to build momentum, and in the 66th minute, third-year fullback Andrew Stewart (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) scored after his free kick hit the goalkeeper's gloves before finding the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Sunday, Sept. 13 — 2-0 win vs. UKC Blue Devils
On Sunday, ¸£Àû¼§ took the lead in the 20th minute when first-year winger Seby Predescu (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) benefited from a bounce off a Blue Devils defender, giving him an open Grade A scoring chance before he put the ball into the bottom-right corner.
Second-year midfielder Hatem Al Masri (Fredericton, N.B.) added to the lead in the 35th minute, making it 2-0 for the final score.
The Hurricanes will look to build on their strong start this upcoming weekend with games Saturday at UNBSJ and Sunday at STU.
The Hurricanes men's football team opened the season with a dominant 40-0 win over the Saint John Falcons.
On the third play of the game, third-year quarterback Troy McLaren (North Bay, Ont.) connected with third-year receiver Mikey Henneberry (Halifax, N.S.) on a deep pass to open the scoring and make it 7-0.
On the very next offensive series, rookie receiver Makhi Magloir (Halifax, N.S.) caught a pass from McLaren and took it for a touchdown to make it 14-0 in the first quarter.
Magloir later caught another touchdown pass from McLaren in the second quarter to make it 21-0 before the Falcons conceded a safety, making it 23-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Hurricanes' offence slowed down, but second-year defensive back and kicker John MacGillivray (Hamilton, Ont.) kicked a field goal to make it 26-0.
In the fourth quarter, the Hurricanes' offence picked up again, with Magloir scoring another touchdown to make it 33-0.
First-year running back Starson Whynot (New Germany, N.S.) added another touchdown late in the fourth quarter for the final score of 40-0.
The Hurricanes football team will be tested next week when it hosts the defending champion Dalhousie Tigers for a Jorts and Jerseys game at 1 p.m. at UPEI Canada Games Place.
The Hurricanes baseball team had a forgettable weekend after going 0-4 in ACBA action.
In their season opener against the Acadia Axemen, everything that could go wrong did. After multiple missed pop flies and errors on routine ground balls, ¸£Àû¼§ found itself down 10-0 after the first inning.
The Hurricanes scored two runs for a final score of 17-2.
Their second game Saturday started with a groundout by rookie pitcher Seth Hansen (New Haven, P.E.I.). Hanson then followed up with a home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Acadia responded with a home run to centre field to make it 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth. The Hurricanes added another run, but the Axemen held on for a 6-3 victory.
On Sunday, the 'Canes baseball team had a more competitive day against the Dalhousie Tigers but still lost both games.
In the first game, the Hurricanes led until the seventh inning, when the Tigers singled to bring home a run and take a 4-3 lead.
Hansen scored a run in the game, while fourth-year outfielder Matthew Peacock (Quispamsis, N.B.) and second-year outfielder Jakob MacEwen (Cornwall, P.E.I.) also crossed the plate.
¸£Àû¼§ then lost 7-3 in the final game Sunday. Rookie outfielder Gabe Waugh (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) scored his first run of the season, while Hansen and MacEwen also got runs.
The Hurricanes will look to get their first win next Saturday in a doubleheader against the UPEI Panthers.
