Job Description
This role is responsible for delivering instructional and coaching components of the CANSAIL curriculum to youth enrolled in the Junior Sailing program at the Summerside Marina. The successful candidate will instruct participants, maintain equipment, and help create a fun, safe, and engaging experience on the water. This is an excellent opportunity for students who enjoy working outdoors, being on the water, and developing leadership and coaching skills in a team-oriented environment. This full-time contract runs Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (40 hours/week) from June to August.
Duties include:
- Report directly to the Operations Manager of Summerside Marina
- Instruct the CANSAIL level as assigned by the Operations Manager.
- Prepare and present lessons in an effective manner, following the CANSAIL guides teaching styles
- Create a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for participants
- Communicate regularly with participants, parents, and team members
- Complete progress reports for students under your instruction
- Obey the CANSAIL Code of Conduct
- Maintain Summerside Marina Property & Equipment
- Ensure coach boats and dinghies are clean and secure
- Ensure the junior sailing shed is clean and secured at the end of each day
- Advise the Operations Manager immediately on any issues pertaining to the junior sailing program
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to a positive staff environment
- Support racing team practices alongside the senior race coach
- When possible and practical, conduct repairs on Summerside Marina equipment
- Report equipment deficiencies to the Operations Manager as soon as practical
- Help with a pre-season setup and post-season tear down of applicable equipment and boats
- Other duties as required by the Operations Manager of the Summerside Marina
Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Competencies:
- Must be a minimum of 15 years of age. Previous coaching or instructional experience is considered an asset but not required.
- Must have CanSail 3-4.
- Must have certification through National Sport Authority (Sail Canada)
- Must have Safe Sport certification
- Must possess a Pleasure Craft Operating Card
- Must hold Sail Canada instructor insurance
- Must provide criminal background check if over 18 years of age
- Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
